I’mmmm Baaaaack

I see the outfit I wear while parking cars at PF Chang's off of Ashford Dunwoody in Atlanta. No, I am not satisfied.

After FINALLY graduating, and then after applying for EVERY newspaper job and internship available in the country, I now look at myself in the mirror and see a valet.  The best looking valet in Atlanta, but still a valet nonetheless.

I am not satisfied.

I’ve applied to openings all over the country.  Sioux Falls, S.D.?  Yea, I applied.  Farmington, N.M.?  Didn’t hear back from them…

Five responses.

Three were to confirm that they received my application.

I’ll admit, my resume lacks professional newspaper experience.  I didn’t get an internship last summer when given the opportunity.

Instead, I applied for a job on the Ocoee River because a lot of my friends work river jobs, and it changed their atitudes towards life in such a positive way that I had to experience it for myself, which I did.  Between the people and the scenery, it was the best thing I’ve ever been a part of.

Unfortunately, I had to leave it behind.

After Labor Day, I returned to Athens to finish my senior semester at the University of Georgia, which was another great chapter in my life.

Working as Chief Photographer for the school paper, The Red & Black, I was given the opportunity to shoot sports at the highest level.  I shot concerts at some of the country’s most famous venues, the 40 Watt and the Georgia Theatre.  I got to shoot interesting features, my favorite profiled a local graffiti artist who was also a university employee.  I never really shot hard news though, which is something that’s killing my portfolio.

Today, I put my latest cover letter away and got on facebook.  1 new notification.  Tina Ray Stults (the owner of Whetstone Photography) posted on my timeline.

"So, what are you planning this summer??? I need to know if you want your old job or if I need to look for someone new...."

She needs to know if I’ll be back this summer.  If I commit, I commit.

On one hand, I want the opportunity to tell the wide variety of stories that a newspaper photographer gets to tell, but on the other hand, at the river I’d be living for free (in a tree house), getting a head start towards paying my student loans back.  The newspaper job is a goal which I believe I can still achieve, while the other is a reality.

There are stories to be told at the river….

Music had a lot to do with my decision.  Was it fate that these two songs came on Pandora back-to-back just as I read Tina’s question?
